GeoSmart finds solutions to geographical problems by combining out-of-the-box geospatial thinking with cutting-edge technologies, such as geographical information systems (GIS), earth observation satellites, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), mobile devices, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
GeoSmart was founded by Prof Adriaan van Niekerk and is a spin-off company of Stellenbosch University. GeoSmart consequently has close ties with the university and often collaborates with its entities, in particular the Centre for Geographical Analysis (CGA).

MEET THE TEAM
Adriaan van Niekerk
GeoSmart was founded by Prof Adriaan van Niekerk in 2019 and is a spin-off company of Stellenbosch University.
Hanu Mostert
Hanu joined GeoSmart in 2021 and completed his Master’s degree on a part-time basis.
Greg Selles
Greg joined GeoSmart in 2023, shortly after completing his Postgraduate degree in Geo-informatics.
Rutger van Huyssteen
Rutger joined GeoSmart in 2024 shortly after finishing his honours degree in Geo-informatics.
Thato Thoka
Thato joined GeoSmart halfway through 2025. He has completed his undergraduate studies in Environmental Management at Cape Peninsula University of Technology and is currently working towards his PGDip honours degree in his field at Stellenbosch University.
Christiaan Goosen
Christiaan joined Geosmart halfway through 2025. He has completed his honours degree in Geo-informatics at Stellenbosch University
